What to do if you find a native animal!
This is just one story from our Winter Paws, Claws and More. You can download the whole newsletter here
Living in Lake Macquarie there are lots of native wildlife living amongst us unseen. There are many animals that live in places you would not expect. The other day in the middle of Eleebana a Bandicoot was spotted on the back patio. Echidnas along the walkway at Redhead. Kangaroos at Edgeworth.
So what do you when you find them? For our marsupials eg Kangaroos, wallabies, possums, ect, they all have pouches. If you happen to come across an injured or deceased one please check their pouches for their young. Even if they have passed away for a while the young can live in the pouch for quite some time, it is important to check them, even better if you carry some spray paint to mark it with a line or an x to show they have been checked.
If you do find the young or injured wildlife, do not offer them food or water unless you are a trained career or within the veterinarian industry as their diets and water needs vary dramatically. To have a warm quiet dark place to put them until you can get in contact with a carer or the vets. Eg a cat carrier with a pillow case to put them in. There are rescue kits you can buy to keep in your car. However as always if you are not comfortable or it is not safe to do so call Hunter Wildlife on 0418 628 483.
