Essential Oils + Cats

Essential oils are organic constitutions of plants that are contributed to fragrance and taste. These are extracted from plants either by cold pressing or distillation. Essential oils can pose a risk to your household pets, but especially in cats. They are rapidly absorbed orally and across the skin, and then into the liver to be metabolized.

Cats have a very high sensitivity to phenols and phenolic compounds which are found in essential oils. The higher the concentration in the oil, the higher the risk. Oils such as pine oils, citrus oils, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil can be toxic. Symptoms involved during the exposure are drooling, vomiting, tremors, ataxia wobbliness), low heart rate, respiratory distress and low body temperature.

Please be cautious to the oils you are using around the furry friends and most importantly don’t apply direct essential oils to your cats.
